Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need an HRV?

If you have problems with wet windows or mildew buildup, an HRV will control these and other problems. Also, if you have problems controlling the level of humidity in your home, an HRV is what you need. The HRV will bring in fresh air and remove the stale air from the inside of the home. The HRV has optional remote controls to detect changing levels of humidity, thus enabling the HRV to circulate more or less air when needed.

What size of HRV do I need for my home?

There are many factors which determine which size of unit you need, including square footage of the home, how many rooms, how many primary occupants, etc. As well, added sources of high humidity, such as a hot tub or pool need to be taken into consideration.

Do I need remote controls to operate an HRV?

No. The HRV is available with manual operating controls that are accessible on the exterior of the unit. The remote controls for operating an HRV are available to make operation of an HRV more convenient for the consumer.

Can an HRV be installed in an existing home?

Yes. However, the home must have an existing air distribution system with ducting installed.

Where do I install an HRV in my home?

An HRV can be installed in close proximity to the existing furnace. A preferable spot is the mechanical room area, laundry area, or basement. It is recommended that the HRV be installed in a heated space.

How much maintenance does an HRV require?

The HRV should be cleaned and inspected once every season [3-4 months]. To maintain efficiency of the unit, washing the filters in warm water and rinsing the heat recovery core are key. Also, inspect the fan blowers for buildup of dust. This could affect the performance of the blower. Inspect the weather hoods on the exterior of the home to make sure they are clear of debris to allow sufficient air flow. Other than these brief tips on maintenance, the HRV should operate trouble-free.

Are there HRVs available for commercial applications?

Yes. There are HRVs available for a variety of commercial applications. The specific unit would depend on the application and how much ventilation is needed. There are also units designed specifically for use in an area with an indoor pool or hot tub.
