What is an ERV? What is an HRV?

Is the appliance in my home an ERV or HRV?

You can determine the type of appliance you have by opening the unit and looking at the core within. An HRV has a metal core, while an ERV has a non-metallic core.

Alternatively, the appliance type can be determined by your model and serial number.

Where can I find the model and serial number on my appliance?

The model and serial of your appliance is listed on a label on the exterior of the unit. Be sure to check all sides as the label may be placed on the side of the unit that is against the wall.

Why is my ERV/HRV running continuously on high speed?

Your ERV/HRV may run continuously on high speed if:

  • The main control is set for high speed
  • A timer has been pressed for high speed override
  • The set point for RH (Relative Humidity) is below the actual relative humidity of your home
  • Other auxiliary controls or timers are engaged in high speed
  • The appliance is in ‘Defrost’ mode. Your ERV / HRV automatically cycles into defrost mode when temperatures fall below -3 C (27 F).

If there is no high-speed demand from any of the above and the unit is still running on high speed, contact your service contractor.

Why is the RH (Relative Humidity) on my digital control flashing?

A flashing ‘RH’ indicates the appliance is operating on high speed in the Dehumidistat function. Once the indoor humidity level reaches the RH set point, the ERV/HRV reverts to its previous set speed and operational mode.

Why is my home humid if my ERV/HRV is operating?

Your ERV/HRV is not a dehumidifier. You will need to use a dehumidifier and/or a properly sized cooling unit to control high humidity problems.

The ERV/HRV is making my house too dry. What should I do?

To reduce dryness in your home:

  • Make sure the relative humidity is not set too low and is not causing the appliance to run on high speed all the time
  • Reduce the fan speed of the appliance
  • Use the intermittent ventilation setting mode (20/40 or 10/50)
  • Install a humidifier

What speed or function should the ERV/HRV be set to?

The most popular setting for residential application is continuous low speed ventilation.

Why is my ERV/HRV not functioning?

Your ERV/HRV may not be working if there is no active power source. Confirm:

  • The breaker is on
  • The ERV/HRV is plugged into a live power outlet
  • The main control is displaying a mode and fan speed

 

If your ERV/HRV is still not functioning after confirming its power source is active, contact your service contractor.

My ERV/HRV is non-functional and my main control and/or timer is flashing. What is wrong?

A flashing light on the timer and/or main control usually indicates a wiring, voltage or communication error. Please contact your service contractor to resolve the issue.

What maintenance is required for my ERV/HRV?

It is important to inspect and maintain your ERV/HRV on a regular basis. The label on the core inside your ERV/HRV notes maintenance instructions. Alternatively, the homeowner’s manual specific to your model provides a maintenance routine for you to follow. Can I use my ERV/HRV during the summer?

Yes, our ERV/HRVs are designed to be used for energy efficient fresh air/ventilation all year-round.

My ERV/HRV has drains but there isn’t any water coming out. Is there anything wrong?

Your ERV/HRV will occasionally have some condensation discharged from the drains. Most moisture is directed outdoors with the exhausted air so it isn’t unusual for there to be no water in the drains.
